For those students studying American politics or Law and for those just interested in American history, this link should be of real interest. This is a list of the seven primary documents held in reverence of their value to the principles of American Freedom. The Library of Congress.
For those who are budding academics and those considering the step, I really liked this site Boston University. It appears to have all the elements required for satisfaction and success in the realm of academia. Take a look at the videos, well done Boston.
I'm sure that most people could state where they were on 9/11 and what thoughts maybe, went through their mind. Well, here's mine, from a political scientist's perspective. I was involved in a large community project called Millennium Point at the time. As one of the Fit-out Team I enjoyed the project very much. The project was very diverse in its constituent parts and very interesting to an individual who enjoys diversity in activity in subject terms . Oh yes, and many thanks to Nick Frazer and the Team. Frazer Randall, for giving me the opportunity to be in involved, I have some great memories.
Anyway, there’s the back drop, now on with the story. I remember taking part in a site inspection the next morning of an adjoining mezzanine floor area with the group of managers. We began a conversation with regard to the tragedy, and they began to pass their individual opinion's on the situation. A situation that had taken over the American people's conscious lives and all of those capable of empathising with their lose of life and confidence, which was unfolding on our TV screens.
The views of my colleagues were varied, from not fully registering it enormity; but then, that was an indication of how some people had little time to spend watching TV and considering the reality of the devastation. The Media who were telling the world continuously of the situation, were not reaching everyone. Some of the others view's were one of bewilderment and in a state of sorrow.
Then, one of the team turned and said, “Well Pat, what's the political scientist's take on the situation?” To which my reply was, which seemed quite natural too say. “I see the beginning of the end of human rights and the role of the State being one of Sacrosanct in the future, in the decisions and activities they choose to take, based on their interests.” “And I’m concerned that we may find that individual rights are going back to a time when individuals were viewed as subjects 'of' the State.”
I have stated what I said at that moment in time, for a number of reasons. Firstly, to expose how, for those, trained in the art of political study, this response would be their next rational thought, once reason and not emotion were in play. And that, I feel, I am far from the minority with that thought, in the realm of political thinkers who would of realised just 'what' this disaster meant to societies as a whole for the future.
Secondly, to point at a particular incident in human experience, that possesses the catalyst to produce a global change in man’s daily activities and lives. So, do you see the fragility of Freedom, as in other principles of life?
There is a statement I'm sure everyone has heard of in social, political and economic environments, it’s called The Poverty trap. Well, does it exist? Are there those who are condemned to a lifetime of consistently living on a low income, set by society or government, which will rarely move, irrespective to their work output?
Well, lets see if you still feel the way you feel at this moment in ten minutes from now.
Imagine your experienced but without economic skill value, by which I mean relative to those who can claim a certain value for the skilled work set by commerce . When your value is set as labor intensive and menial (as may be the label given to the case), how do you think the market and the system will be prepared for your entry into the employment market place?
I'm going to leave you to confirm one way or the other whether your perspective has changed, by leaving you a tool I designed with the help of an old college pal Mr Eddie Roberts and Co. and try it out on the individual's experiences of employed activity and if you feel inclined, drop me a line on the result of the experience.
INSTRUCTIONS: There are cells with 'black boxes', where you can put data values and assess the influence on one's earnings. By adding or take away the money too, you can see the effects on the individual or family. Then by looking at the graph, see what happens to their realized income (by which I mean collective income), after their contributions to Society and society's Rights over them verses their Rights from that Society. The password is 'Permitted,' don't forget the capital P.
This is a spreadsheet I made many yours ago, which allows you to analyze numerically, low income family wages, based on the State Support or Tax and benefit breaks, which subsidize businesses' who pay low wages, due to the value set for that work. My question is. Is the such thing as a Poverty Trap? Also, can you get out of it without enhancing your labor value with improved labor value skills and new environments of work or by just, hard work and long hours in that role?
You can write your own figures into the black boxes after downloading the spreadsheet. You can see the results on the graph which will show all of the effects on income and income improvement verses benefit changes or lost benefits incrementally. I wrote a report to this expressing the analyses and findings. You are welcome to the report if you are interested. Just drop me your email.

As justice is a difficult substance to define; words like fairness, equality, liberty and balance, and in general terms ‘just principles,’ all loosely sit together to define the application of justice. However, many philosophers disagree as to the parameters and content of justice, in relation to the need and use of justice by State and Society, verses the individual. The resulting fact is, that we find many variants and conceptions of the subject.Justice only exit whilst individuals see the need to come together and form a collective, and in turn, form a society. It is at this time that the need for justice comes into effect, in the pursuit of equality of those, who form the collective, and the protection given to all who congregate and exchange one right for another, in a just society all should be equal, for a concept ofJustice to exist.
I have put further details with various thinker's views on the subject and taking the model set by John Rawls, an American moral and political philosopher.
Democracy, in Greek demokratia (rule by the people), birth place Athens in Greece.
The original intention of this political system was to bring about the act of citizen participation in the decision making process. Directly or indirectly by way of voting and elected representative. Athens in the 4th century AD would have been described as a CityState with many other opposing forms of governors in control of the territories around Athens. Leading their own particular brand of state or territory control.
It has been overthrown in history and has had tyrannical takeovers. Democracy has had a revival in the last two hundred years, after a long period of obscurity. In more recent times, its character, has taken on a representative approach, expressing a more indirect approach to its character and development. There are those in the modern world, who have used the term to describe themselves, whilst there are little signs of the political system in reality. The term has been used as a veneer, over the top of the true nature of that type of government or the tyrannical governors.
If you were ask the question, where is the Birth place of the term we hear so often espoused in today's society 'Democracy' and what does it stand for, what would your answer be?
I would be extremely interested in the results to that question, if based on a reasonable group being asked in say a city centre. Well, what I'm going to do over the period ahead, is qualify a number of fundamental objects we today hold in great esteem, whilst possibly being unaware of just how fluid these principals are in reality, as well as their fragility.
Words like: Democracy, Justice, Choice, Freedom, Rights, Fairness, Equality and Liberty, just to name a few, are the values held up as the lamp of enlightenment and sophistication of a State or Country. To do any justice to these ideals, if you'll pardon the pun, these principles of a Just and Fair society, must be considered objectively and pragmatically in the approach to their study. If not, the possibility exists, that their rational qualification may continue to be fluid and so diluted.
I'm hopeful that the historical and philosophical journey we will go on, will be both interesting and entertaining. I had the pleasure of studying this subject 10 years ago and could not of guessed how it would impact on my life and character, and more importantly, my inner nature.
I began the process of formal education in my early thirties. I was self-employed in the construction industry. I had a good reputation for my practical skills, but my lack of formal education left me fumbling on many occasions. I was chastised on a number of occasions by those better educated, particularly in contractual and business terms. So I set about equipping myself with tools I felt necessary to take on the activities of business. With four children, my partner and the obvious home to keep, I set out on the path of education.
There was a statement that really struck a cord with my position at that time, it was "He who does not know his past, can not understand the present, so can not control the future."
Later I would find another candle to comfort me through the journey which was "Sweet hope that follows man's wondering purpose, treads by his side, gladdens his heart, and comforts his old age."
I have been restating those two quotes for more than 10 years now and they continue to mature like a great vintage wine. Getting deeper and with more body by each passing year, always making me smile with the regularity they express themselves in the activity of human intercourse.
